Spring 2026 Boys Tennis Tryout Information

Monday March 2 through Thursday March 5, at the College Boulevard Activity Center Tennis Courts (across Lone Elm to the West of Olathe Northwest High School) from 3:00 until approximately 5:30.  Depending on player count and court availability, some players may be sent to the ONW school courts.

All players MUST have proper physical and concussion paperwork on file in the office (this is digital now) BEFORE participating in tryouts.  (See "important links" page under "home" of this website)

Tryouts will be in the form of singles challenge matches, with a maximum of 24 players making the roster, along with the following rule:

• any senior must end up in the top 12 to make the team (this policy is in place to ensure JV matches serve the correct purpose, and the limited court space at ONW goes to developing players who have a chance to contribute at the varsity level in the future)

Weather during tryouts is typically COLD, and players need to be prepared to play tennis continuously for up to 2 hours during this process. Make sure to bring anything you'll need to stay warm in between matches!

• Some players may be exempt from the tryout process due to participation in high level USTA tournaments (or prior state medalist status), but PLEASE get in touch with me ASAP at dasmith@olatheschools.org to indicate your desire to participate and make a plan for joining our team at the appropriate time.

General season information:

Practices are held Monday through Friday, 3:00-5:00 in general. Specific schedules, that are updated regularly, can be found under the "schedules" tab of this website.

Players need to provide their own racket to use during the season, and players will also pay a uniform fee, (estimated to be  $30-35) which covers a shirt that the players get to keep. (Players provide their own shorts for competition).

I do 99% of my communication directly with players through the BAND app.

Tuesday 3/24 - Practice @ ONW - 3:00 - 5:00

Week 5 - March 30 - April 3 (finally some competition!)

Monday 3/30 - Practice @ ONW - 3:00 - 5:00 (all players)

Tuesday 3/31 - JV Quad @ CBAC (vs. O-North, O-South, Leavenworth) - 9 players out @ 2:15, on court warming up at 2:45, matches @ 3:15. This is a round robin quad, so you'll play 3 matches in your flight.

All others - Practice @ ONW w/Coach Smith - 3:00-5:00

Wednesday 4/1 - Varsity Tournament @ Mill Valley (MV, STA, Pitt, Sp. Hill, Bon. Sp., Bish. Miege, ???) - 6 players out all day. Leave ONW @ 8:00, matches start @ 9:00. This is a flighted tournament, so you'll play 4 matches in your flight.

All others - Practice @ ONW w/Coach Johns - 3:00 - 5:00

Thursday 4/2 -  JV Dual @ Mill Valley - 8 players out @ 2:15, leave ONW @ 2:35, matches start @ 3:30. This is a JV Duel so you'll play 1 singles match and 1 doubles match.

All others - Practice @ ONW w/Coach Smith - 3:00 - 5:00

Friday 4/3 - Practice @ ONW - 3:00 - 4:30

Week 6 - April 6-10 

Monday 4/6 - Practice @ ONW - 3:00 - 5:00 (all players)

Tuesday 4/7 - Varsity Tournament* @ Emporia (+Piper, STA, Topeka, ???) - 6 players out @ 12:15, leave ONW @ 12:45, matches @ 3:00. This is an open bracketed tournament, you'll play 3 or 4 matches depending on # of teams, and could play against teammates. *Coach Johns is taking y'all to this tournament!

All others - Practice @ ONW w/Coach Smith - 3:00-5:00

Wednesday 4/8 - JV Tournament* @ Mill Valley (+ Basehor-Linwood, Piper, Bon. Sp., Bish. Miege, Lansing, Free State) - 6 players out all day. Leave ONW @ 8:00, matches start @ 9:00. This is a flighted tournament, so you'll play 4 matches in your flight. *Coach Smith is taking y'all to this tournament!

All others - Practice @ ONW w/Coach Johns - 3:00 - 5:00

Thursday 4/9 -  Varsity Tournament @ Spring Hill (+Piper, Free State, Chanute) - 6 players out all day. Leave ONW at 7:45, matches start at 9:00 (unless we have a 1st round bye). This is a flighted round robin, you'll play 4 matches in your flight and have one bye round.

JV Dual @ Indian Creek Rec Center (vs. SM South) - 8 players out @ 2:15, leave ONW @ 2:35, matches start @ 3:30. This is a JV Duel so you'll play 1 singles match and 1 doubles match.

*NO PRACTICE IF YOU ARE NOT PLAYING MATCHES - COURTS WILL BE OPEN!

Friday 4/3 - Practice @ ONW - 3:00 - 4:30

Week 7 - April 13-18* (yes, a Saturday!) 

Monday 4/13 - Practice @ ONW - 3:00 - 5:00 (all players)

Tuesday 4/14 - Varsity Tournament @ GEHS (+O-North, SMNW, SMW, MV) - 6 players out @ 11:35 (or 11:10 to eat B lunch if you have C or D lunch), leave ONW @ 12:00, matches @ 1:00. This is a flighted tournament, you'll play 3 matches in your flight.

All others - Practice @ ONW w/Coach Johns - 3:00-5:00

Wednesday 4/15 - JV Quad @ GEHS (+ SMNW, Lawrence) - 6 players out @ 11:35 (or 11:00 to eat A lunch if you have B, C, or D lunch. Leave ONW @ 12:00, matches start @ 1:00. This is a flighted quad, so you'll play 3 matches in your flight.

All others - Practice @ ONW w/Coach Smith - 3:00 - 5:00

Thursday 4/16 -  Varsity Quad @ CBAC (vs. Blue Valley, Manhattan, Free State) - 9 players out @ 2:00, on court @ CBAC by 2:30 warming up, matches start at 3:00. This is a flighted quad, you'll play 3 matches in your flight.

All others - Practice @ ONW w/Coach Johns - 3:00-5:00

Friday 4/17 - JV Tournament @ CBAC (vs. OE, SMS, SMNW, BV, ON, ???) - 8 players out all day, on court @ CBAC warming up at 7:30 AM! Matches start at 8:00. This is a flighted round-robin tournament, so you'll play 6 matches in your flight and have one bye round.

Practice @ ONW - 3:00 - 4:30 w/Coach Smith JUST for the 6 guys playing tomorrow!

Saturday 4/18 - Varsity Tournament @ CBAC (vs. OS, Derby, BVN, BVW, SME, SMS, LFS) - 6 players, @ CBAC by 8:15 to warm up, matches start at 9. This is an open round-robin format tournament, so you'll play 5 matches (3 in your pool, then 2 against people from other pools). This tournament usually ends around 4:30 if there is no weather delays.

Week 8 - April 20-24

Monday 4/20 - Varsity Quad @ Paola (+Chanute, Bishop Miege) - 6 players out @ 1:15, Leave ONW @ 1:45, Matches start @ 3:00. This is a flighted round robin, so you'll play 3 matches in your flight.

All others - Practice @ ONW w/Coach Johns - 3:00 - 5:00

Tuesday 4/21 - JV Duel @ Lawrence - 8 players out @ 2:10, leave ONW @ 2:30, matches @ 3:30. This is a JV Duel, so you'll play 1 singles match and 1 doubles match.

All others - Practice @ ONW w/Coach Smith - 3:00-5:00

Wednesday 4/22 - JV Duel @ Spring Hill - 8 players out @ 2:10, leave ONW @ 2:30, matches @ 3:30. This is a JV Duel, so you'll play 1 singles match and 1 doubles match.

All others - Practice @ ONW w/Coach Smith - 3:00 - 5:00

Thursday 4/23 -  JV Tournament @ CBAC (vs. all Olathe, all SM, Lawrence, Free State, GE, & MV) - This is the JV Sunflower League Tournament! 6 players excused all day, on court @ CBAC by 8:00 (14 teams sharing 12 courts...) This is a flighted bracketed tournament, so you'll play 3 or 4 matches depending on your seed & results.

Practice for just the 6 playing tomorrow @ ONW from 3:00 - 4:00 (we are hosting JV league, so no coach will be there... just make sure you go through a good warmup and hit all the shots - serves, groundstrokes, volleys, and play a few points)

Friday 4/24 - Varsity Tournament @ Free State & Rock Chalk Park (+Lawrence, SMSouth, SMWest, SMEast, O-North, O-West) - 6 players - meet @ ONW to leave by 11:40. Matches start @ 1:00. This is a flighted bracketed tournament so you'll play 3 matches in your flight.

NO PRACTICE! (this is not a school day, and both coaches may be needed at the varsity tournament)

Week 9 - April 27 - May 1

Monday 4/27 - Olathe City Championship @ CBAC (vs. O-East, O-North, O-South, O-West) - 12 players out all day, on court @ CBAC by 8:15 AM. Matches begin @ 9:00. This is a flighted round-robin, so you'll play 4 matches in your flight.

NO PRACTICE! Come cheer on your teammates after school as we (hopefully) bring home the Olathe City Championship Trophy (again!)

Tuesday 4/28 - Practice @ ONW - 3:00-5:00

Wednesday 4/29 - Practice @ ONW - 3:00 - 4:30 - THIS IS THE LAST FULL TEAM PRACTICE OF THE SEASON!

Thursday 4/30 -  Varsity Tournament @ CBAC (vs. all Olathe, all SM, Lawrence, Free State, GE, & MV) - This is the Sunflower League Tournament! 6 players excused all day, on court @ CBAC by 8:00 (14 teams sharing 12 courts...) This is an open bracketed tournament, so you'll play anywhere from 2 to 5 matches depending on your seed & results.

NO PRACTICE! Come cheer on varsity @ CBAC!

Friday 5/1 - JV Duel @ CBAC (vs. Free State) - ?? players out @ 2:20 to get over to CBAC before traffic gets bad. On court warming up by 2:50, matches start at 3:30 at the latest. This is a JV Duel so you'll get 1 singles and 1 doubles match (maybe more!) This will be the last event of the season for several players!

NO PRACTICE if you aren't in the matches today!

Week 10 - May 4-9 (*yes, a saturday)

Monday 5/4 - JV Quad @ CBAC (vs. Free State, SM West, Blue Valley) - 9 players out @ 1:50, on court @ CBAC by 2:25 warming up, matches @ 3:00. This will be the last action of the season for all the participating players! This is a flighted quad so you'll play 3 matches in your flight.

Top 6 players - Practice @ ONW - 3:00-4:30 w/ Coach Smith* (we will take at least one day this week off of practice depending on weather and when you guys want to get lessons from your private coaches).

Tuesday 5/5 - Top 6 players Practice @ ONW - 3:00-4:30 - w/Coach Smith

Wednesday 5/6 - Top 6 players Practice @ ONW - 3:00-4:30 - w/Coach Smith

Thursday 5/7 -  Top 6 players Practice @ ONW - 3:00-4:30 - w/Coach Smith

Friday 5/8 - Top 6 players Practice @ ONW - 3:00-4:30 - w/Coach Smith

Saturday 5/9 - Regionals @ TBA! *(regionals may start on Friday!)

Week 11 - May 11-16 (*yes, a saturday)

Monday 5/11 - State Qualifiers only - Practice @ ONW - 3:00-4:30 w/ Coach Smith* (we will take at least one day this week off of practice depending on weather and when you guys want to get lessons from your private coaches).

Tuesday 5/12 - State Qualifiers only - Practice @ ONW - 3:00-4:30 - w/Coach Smith

Wednesday 5/13 - State Qualifiers only - Practice @ ONW - 3:00-4:30 - w/Coach Smith

Thursday 5/14 -   State Qualifiers only - Drive to Wichita & practice somewhere down there! Timing TBD.

Friday 5/15 - State tournament in Wichita - Day 1! Lets stay alive!

Saturday 5/16 - State tournament in Wichita - Day 2! Lets get some hardware!

Fall 2026 Girls Tennis!

Girls Tennis Tryouts Start on Monday August 17th, 2026

• Assuming good weather, tryouts will run from 3:00-5:30 PM Monday August 17 - Thursday August 20 @ CBAC (just West of ONW across Lone Elm). If weather does not allow roster decisions to be made, tryouts may continue beyond that date.

We will, of course, follow guidance related to heat provided by the district, but make sure to bring anything you'll need to stay cool and hydrated during and in between matches!

• Some players may be exempt from the tryout process due to participation in high level USTA tournaments (or prior state medalist status), but PLEASE get in touch with me ASAP at dasmith@olatheschools.org to indicate your desire to participate and make a plan for joining our team at the appropriate time.
